Eleven years ago next month, I stood in the parking lot of our local nature center, my heart thudding as I wondered if anyone would actually show up. It was the first meeting of what I’d optimistically called the Outdoor Book Club. The idea had come to me during a time when I was searching for connection—both with people and the outdoors. I envisioned women hiking trails, discussing books, and rediscovering their strength and courage together. But as I stood in the snowy parking lot, I started questioning whether this was a terrible idea.
And then, one by one, a few hardy souls arrived. It wasn’t a big group, but that didn’t matter. We set out on the trail, stepping carefully over roots and sharing shy smiles, and before long, we were deep into a discussion about The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. The magic of that story—and of the crisp, fresh air around us—worked its spell. By the end of the hike, it didn’t feel like the beginning of something tentative anymore. It felt like the beginning of something real.
Starting something new, whether it’s a book club, a new job, or a whole new chapter of life, often feels like that first hike: uncertain, a little awkward, and maybe even a bit lonely at first. But it can also be exhilarating—a chance to shake things up and step into the unknown. And when it feels overwhelming? That’s where books come in. The right book can be a guide, a companion, or a source of courage when you need it most.
Books and trails have a lot in common—both will take you places you didn’t expect, but only if you’re willing to lace up and get moving. In this essay, I’m sharing some of my favorite books for new beginnings—stories and wisdom that remind us it’s never too late to turn the page and start fresh. Whether you’re stepping onto a new trail or just dreaming about it, these books are here to inspire your next chapter.
Memoirs of Courageous Change
Transformation is rarely neat or easy—it’s messy, beautiful, and always worth it. These memoirs remind us that even in our hardest moments, growth is possible, and the journey is where we find ourselves.
“Wild” by Cheryl Strayed
If you’ve ever felt like life has completely fallen apart, Wild is the book for you. Cheryl Strayed’s raw and deeply personal memoir recounts her decision to hike over 1,000 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail after the devastating loss of her mother and the breakdown of her marriage. Alone on the trail, carrying an oversized pack and more emotional baggage than she thought possible, she slowly finds herself again—one grueling step at a time.
Strayed’s story is an ode to the power of nature and solitude to heal. It’s a reminder that rebuilding after loss is rarely linear, but it’s almost always transformative.
Nature has always been my place of renewal, too. Starting Outdoor Book Club was, in part, my way of tapping into the healing power of the outdoors and sharing it with others. Like Strayed, I’ve found that hiking is more about the emotional and spiritual one than the physical path. Because every time I step onto a trail, I feel a little more whole.
“Becoming” by Michelle Obama
Michelle Obama’s memoir is a graceful exploration of her life, from growing up on the South Side of Chicago to becoming First Lady of the United States. She writes candidly about navigating change, from her early days as a working mom to life in the political spotlight. Her journey is a testament to resilience, reinvention, and staying grounded amidst constant evolution.
Becoming is a powerful reminder that new beginnings often come in seasons, each one building on the last. It shows that personal growth doesn’t mean having all the answers, but instead showing up, learning, and growing into who you’re meant to be.
One of my favorite lessons from this book is that you don’t need to have your path perfectly planned to embrace a new chapter. It’s enough to take the next step and trust that the rest will unfold.
Self-Help with Soul
Some books don’t just give you advice—they speak directly to your heart, guiding you with wisdom and practical tools to create real, lasting change. These two are perfect companions for anyone ready to step into a new chapter with purpose and intention.
“Atomic Habits” by James Clear
If there’s one book that makes starting fresh feel achievable, it’s Atomic Habits. James Clear breaks down the science of habit formation into simple, actionable steps that even the most overwhelmed among us can follow. Whether you’re trying to exercise more, write that book, or simply drink more water, Clear’s approach is all about starting small, staying consistent, and focusing on the process instead of perfection.
Clear’s philosophy is simple but profound: tiny changes, compounded over time, can transform your life.
“The Desire Map” by Danielle LaPorte
When was the last time you asked yourself how you want to feel? The Desire Map flips traditional goal-setting on its head by encouraging you to identify your core desired feelings first and then set goals that align with them. Danielle LaPorte’s soulful, intuitive approach is perfect for anyone who’s tired of chasing external benchmarks and is ready to dream bigger while staying true to themselves.
Years after I first read this book, I still come back to it every January. And later when I introduced The Desire Map to some of my coaching clients, I was blown away by how quickly it resonated with them. It’s helped women chart new paths by focusing on the feelings they want to cultivate—whether that’s freedom, connection, or courage. There’s something so empowering about realizing you don’t have to have all the answers. Often, it’s enough to follow what feels right.
Fiction That Feels Like a Fresh Start
Sometimes the best inspiration comes wrapped in a story. Fiction has a way of letting us see ourselves in its characters, reminding us that change is possible, even when it feels messy or uncertain. These two novels beautifully capture the magic of fresh starts.
“Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine” by Gail Honeyman
Eleanor Oliphant likes her life exactly the way it is—predictable, isolated, and perfectly ordered. But when a simple act of kindness disrupts her carefully constructed world, she begins to see that maybe she’s not as “fine” as she’s always told herself. What unfolds is a quirky, heartwarming story about breaking free of old patterns, embracing connection, and learning to live authentically.
Change doesn’t always look glamorous or feel comfortable, but it can lead to the kind of connection and growth we didn’t even know we needed.
“The Midnight Library” by Matt Haig
What if you could undo every regret in your life and see how things might have turned out differently? That’s the premise of The Midnight Library, where Nora Seed finds herself in a magical library between life and death. Each book in the library offers her a chance to live a different version of her life based on the choices she could have made. But as she explores these alternate paths, Nora discovers that happiness isn’t about perfection—it’s about finding meaning in the life she’s living now.
This deeply imaginative novel tackles regret, choice, and the transformative power of starting over. It’s a love letter to second chances and a reminder that it’s never too late to rewrite your story.
This book will resonate with anyone who’s ever questioned their past decisions. It gently nudges you to look at your life through a lens of gratitude and possibility, rather than regret.
Honorable Mentions
Not every book needs a deep dive—some just deserve a spotlight for the inspiration they bring to the table. Here’s a quick list of more titles to fuel your fresh start:
“Big Magic” by Elizabeth Gilbert For creatives ready to leap into their passions, this book is a joyful, no-nonsense guide to embracing curiosity, fear, and the magic of creativity.
“Playing Big” by Tara Mohr One of my all-time favorite books. Perfect for women stepping into their power, this book gives you the tools to overcome self-doubt and start showing up boldly in the world.
“Maybe You Should Talk to Someone” by Lori Gottlieb Equal parts hilarious and deeply moving, this memoir-turned-therapy session offers wisdom for anyone navigating emotional crossroads or life transitions. This might be the most “readable” book I’ve ever picked up.
Each of these books delivers a dose of insight, courage, and just the right amount of “you’ve got this” energy to carry you into your next chapter.
You don’t need a trail map for your life—but a good book is a pretty solid compass.
Starting something new is rarely easy. It can be messy, uncertain, and sometimes downright scary. But the right book? It can be the gentle nudge you need, the steady hand on your shoulder, or the laugh that keeps you going. Whether you’re looking for clarity, courage, or just a little inspiration, these stories and guides remind us that every new beginning is a chance to grow into the person we’re meant to be.
